Yes, the love of my life is one more year older today. On this day only a few short years ago a little piece of heaven was birthed into this world and they named her ‘Sherry’.
Sherry blesses me daily with her affection and intuition. She loves to serve (and actually serves to love – ask me about that later). She’s kind, forgiving, thoughtful, considerate and all mine.
Sherry completes me, where I lack she excels – she has never hesitated to back me up and she always makes me look good.
She has an incredible insight into the relational dynamics of almost every situation and will suggest things for me to say and do to make me look good. And she does this often and without prompting.
She’s an incredible landscaper, very hard working, has a remarkable spatial sense and is talented with colour and texture. Our house always looks amazing and our yard is the envy of our neighbors (well, not right now since it’s under some pretty heavy construction, but usually).
She is my angel, my lover, my best friend.
Sherry, I love you.
My birthday weekend was really, really nice. Friday night was nice and easy – Sherry and I did a little bit of cleaning up and then watched a movie with popcorn, a little TV and then called it an early night. Very easy, very nice.
Saturday after my 6am meeting I hung out with a buddy of mine and we tried to get his databases to talk to each other. We got so close and couldn’t figure out one little setting to make it all work. We could see everything but the tables. Bummer.
Lunch, puttering with LPs and then Laser Tag at 5:00 – that was a great time with some really good friends and then back here for pizza. And cake. And a little fun reminding me that I’m 40 (over-the-hill gag gifts and a little ribbing). That was a really good time and pretty much ended the day.
Sunday was church, lunch at my Mom’s, a video session with the Senior Youth and then the rest of the evening with Sherry. We did a really nice mushroom (my favourite!) dinner and then a very relaxing date night. I really love Sherry.
Turning 40 was actually pretty easy. I have a fabulous family (I know that Michelle will get it and she’ll be a happy, healthy adult in just a couple of years). I love my job, I work for a great company. My debts are all paid off (except a five year mortgage locked in at 4.95%). My retirement plan is mostly on track. We’re saving for a trip to Europe and I have a rewarding life. What’s not to like about 40?
I’m thankful that I’m thankful. It’s healthy, rewarding and reminds me of how much I have going for me.
I’m thankful that my financial plans are working out the way they’re supposed to. It would be nice to get a pay raise big enough that Sherry didn’t have to work, but everything else is more or less on track.
I’m thankful that my friends and family love me enough to rib me about turning 40. It’s nice that people care.
This weekend marks my 40th birthday. Ya me!
I’m pretty sure that I’m getting a weekend away for my birthday (to be taken in December while Sherry is off work). I could be wrong, but that’s how Sherry has been hinting lately.
I love getting away with Sherry.
Oh, hey, good news! There’s a rumor going around work that I’ll be able to take Sherry with me on a business trip that’s planned for next month. That’ll be pretty cool – there will be three of us from the office going and we’ll each bring our S.O’s to hang out with at night and then during the meetings the girls can do girl stuff (shopping?). Fun fun.
Michelle is still having a tough time coping with stress. A kid in her class has a pet snake. Michelle has a serious snake phobia (I think the latin term is lawyerphobia). I’m sure you can see where this is headed. Kid pulls snake out of pocket during class, teacher says ‘oh how cute – it can stay just for this class’. Michelle panics and then has no coping mechanism to talk herself down. She came home.
I’m thankful that I live in an era of modern medicine. We’ve beaten so many of the diseases that would have ended my life by 40 in the dark ages. My quality of life is far better than it would have been even just two centuries ago.
I’m thankful that I have time for leisure. I don’t have to hunt, gather, cultivate or collect water. I can take two full days off my work to rest and play and not have to worry about where my next meal will come from.
I’m thankful that I’m married to a very creative woman. Sherry and I are planning to do a painting together – an abstract painting to go on our basement wall to cover up a defect in the paneling. Here’s my first attempt at an idea for the painting. I’ll put a photo of the real thing here once it’s done early next year.
